Challenge

Latina Institute approached Elevate in early 2021 during a phase that included a rebrand, a multi-year strategic planning process, and staff transitions, including the onboarding of a new Executive Director. At the time, the organization was also responding to rapidly evolving political and legal realities around access to reproductive healthcare. Latina Institute was seeking additional capacity to keep up with their grants calendar, prospect new funding opportunities, and evolve their language to address the intersectional nature of their work and the shifting landscape of reproductive justice. Meanwhile, they needed support to develop the infrastructure necessary for a sustainable grant program.

Response

Latina Institute engaged Elevate for Comprehensive Grant Writing Services in May 2021 to secure consistent support for grant writing, prospect research, and grant pipeline management. The Elevate team developed research briefs on prospective funders, wrote concept notes on the organization’s strategic planning process, and provided consistent thought partnership on grant strategy. 

In the first three years of our partnership, Elevate became a trusted bedrock partner that supported the organization as it navigated the waters of both internal and external change. Elevate developed compelling language and identified new funders for emerging priorities, including a state campaign in Texas and a national leadership development initiative.

Impact

Elevate’s team provides the grant writing capacity and continuity that allows Latina Institute’s development and program staff to focus on the other crucial aspects of their work. With Elevate’s support, Latina Institute’s grant win rate is roughly 5 times the national average, and their investment in Elevate services has resulted in a ROI of 24:1. Elevate has also provided the systems, infrastructure, and thought partnership that serves as a foundation for a sustainable grant program.

About the Organization

National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (Latina Institute) was founded in 1994 and is the only national reproductive justice organization focused on Latina/x communities. Latina Institute works to build a base of Latina/x activists leading the fight for reproductive justice; supports policies that improve the reproductive health and well-being of Latinas/xs; and gives activists the tools to tell their stories, develop awareness campaigns, and conduct opinion research with their communities.
